New Twilight Saga: Eclipse Teaser Poster

Bloody Disgusting snapped a pic of the brand new teaser poster for Twilight: Eclipse.I have no idea what Eclipse is about since I never read the books, but I'm pretty sure it involves more of Bella, Edward and Jacob running around in the forest. In ECLIPSE, Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger as Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob — knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the ageless struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella is confronted with the most important decision of her life.Oh ok. I guess there's more to it than a girl running around the forest with two dudes.Click the cleverly cropped image below to see the whole thing.

Guapo Cam: Kristen Stewart Talks New Moon

One thing that confuses me are press conferences. And really, it's not the press conference itself, it's the way the studios do them. We now live in the internet, Flip cam, iPhone and camcorder age where video is everywhere. Everything is filmed. So why are we still in the dinosaur tape recorder era when it comes to press conferences? This isn't a rant, but the times are changing when it comes to bringing fans the news. I've done a lot of video at press conferences before. Shit, at Comic-Con that's practically all I did. Why video? Because the information gets to you, the reader, faster. Nothing the star says is taken out of context or misquoted when its translated to text. And besides, wouldn't you rather see the star talk about the movie you're paying money to watch? I know I would. I got about the first five minutes of Kristen Stewart talking about New Moon at today's press conference before security told me I had to stop filming. And I stopped. No questions asked. I'm not trying to piss off the studio and the reps/publicists. They've been awesome to Latinoreview. All I'm trying to do is promote their film the best way possible. And when it comes to Twilight, I know you fans LOVE anything you can get your hands on when it comes to Bella and Edward. So Twilight and New Moon fans, I did my best in trying to bring you the coverage you deserve, but "the man" shut a brutha down. The clicking you hear is the lady next to me typing as Kristen is talking. Now that's annoying. The rest of the interview is in its exciting text format below the clip. Also, look for Robert Pattison and Taylor Lautner interviews in the coming days.

Just when you had forgotten he was ever in a movie, Eminem -- rapper and star of 2002's 8 Mile -- has announced he has another film lined up.
ScreenDaily reports that Eminem will soon be starring in Shady Talez, a 3D movie that will be "styled as The Twilight Zone meets Creepshow." The movie will also see a four-issue comic adaptation in 2010.
While the film will be produced by D.J. Classicz/Davis Entertainment, Kevin Grevioux, who created the story for Underworld, will co-write the screenplay with the writer/producer, Dallas Jackson. The pair will also team up for the comic series.

The Howling Gets a(nother) Sequel

I'm not well-acquainted with the 1981 werewolf film, The Howling, or its six sequels, but I know even less about the latest entry into the series, The Howling Reborn. Turns out I'm not the only one.
News about The Howling Reborn is fresh and just hitting the 'net thanks to ShockTillYouDrop (STYD). Attending the American Film Market, someone spotted a poster for the sequel -- or possibly remake -- from Moonstone Entertainment.
The poster, which you can click over to see here, says that the film was written and directed by Joe Nimziki, a man who STYD points out only has one TV credit to his name. No word on how far along the film is, but it is worth noting that the poster reuses the image from the special edition DVD release of the original film.

(Thanks to ObscureHorror.com for the DVD image.)

UPDATED! The Wolfman Gets a New Poster

Was I skeptical when I first heard about The Wolfman, a remake of the classic 40s film? Yes. Did I breath sigh of relief when I heard that Benicio del Toro would play the title character? Hell yes. Is answering your own questions kind of annoying? Why, of course --
Err, nevermind all that. The Wolfman is poised to leap into theaters in February and the trailer already has me excited. Now, thanks to the folks at Cinematical, we can bring you a look at one of the new posters for the film. (Click the pic below to head to the source for the full image.)
Sure, it's a little plain but, from what I can tell, this movie is anything but. If you don't believe me, have another look at the trailer.

Back in Sept it was reported that Universal Pictures is doing a live-action pic based on Hasbro's naval combat board game "Battleship" with Peter Berg at the helm.Universal already has a set date to release the film on August 5, 2011.Berg himself has said that the film is a contemporary story of an international five-ship fleet engaged in a very dynamic, violent and intense battle, BUT he didn't say anything or give any details about the enemy.THAT WAS TILL NOW.A source has confirmed with me that the enemies will be ALIENS!REALLY? Aliens? COME ON NOW...well its better than having Battleship pegs as the enemy.I guess the Military will corporate with the film since they love to do battle with aliens and show off their new toys.Production on "Battleship" will begin next spring. So what do you think? Is this a good idea or not? Let us know.Source: LatinoReview

ICE AGE: Dawn of the Dinosaurs Blu-Ray Review

ICE AGE: DAWN OF THE DINOSAURS20th CENTURY FOX HOME ENTERTAINMENT2009/ Rated PG/ 94 minsNow Available – List Price $39.98After disasters like 'Titan AE' and 'Anastasia', the original 'Ice Age' probably saved Fox's animation division, but proved to be another nail in the coffin of traditional animated films. Thankfully, Pixar's new deal with Disney means we'll be seeing a return of those films like the upcoming 'The Princess and the Frog', while Fox and Blue Sky Studios continue to trail them with tired formulas. The characters in the 'Ice Age' films are endearing and that's probably due in large part to the vocal efforts of Ray Romano, Denis Leary and John Leguizamo. Yet despite box-office success there are a number of missing factors preventing these films from being put on a pedestal and praised like any work that comes out of Pixar.Blue Sky Studios have provided no just wonderful animation, but incredible visual effects for films by directors like James Cameron. The characters in their animated films are likable and even the stories are simplistic and easy to identify with. So why haven't films like the 'Ice Age' series, 'Robots' and 'Horton Hears a Who' held in high regard? The the stories in their films are good, they just don't cross over with audiences of all ages. Much of the box-office success of their films is solely dependent on kids dragging their parents to the movies, but unlike Pixar, Blue Sky's films aren't made for adults as well. It's doubtful that you'll see a businessman seeking out a showing of 'Ice Age' during an extended lunch hour like he would for 'Wall-E' or 'Up'. Trust me, I've seen it.Knowing a good thing when they see it, Blue Sky has produced another installment of 'Ice Age' and though the series has grown long in the tooth, the film is a visual marvel. When we last saw Manny the Mammoth (Romano) he had found love with another of his kind in the form of Ellie (Queen Latifah). Now that she is pregnant with their first child, Manny has become an extremely overprotective nervous wreck the point where he's constructed a baby proof playground. Time has taken its toll on sabretooth tiger Diego (Leary) who is beginning to feel the effects of aging and isn't the fierce predator he once was. He's slowing down and knows it, feeling as if he should leave the herd and strike out on his own. As for Sid the sloth (Leguizamo) he's feeling left out because his friends are too preoccupied with their own problems. After he stumbles upon an underground cave, Sid discovers three eggs and decides to become a parent just like Manny. Little does he know these are dinosaur eggs and when the babies do hatch, they immediately take to him as if he were their mother. The problem is he's not their mother and when the real mccoy shows up she obviously wants them back. Though the original 'Ice Age' was set in a time long after the extinction of dinosaurs, the filmmakers have somehow found a way to bring them back just to serve the purpose of having Manny and Diego rescue Sid from another ridiculous situation. Having an underground rainforest serve as a habitat for the dinosaurs is a plot device that will no doubt cause more than a few eyes to roll, but children will get more excited for the action sequences that take place within.Things get familiar very fast with this film, but thankfully there's plenty of Scrat the squirrel, still chasing after acorns and even managing to find a romantic interest. There's also the introduction of Buck (Simon Pegg) a weasel who serves as a guide for the group having lived in the wild for too long. Pegg's vocal work is top notch, making Buck a more likable character than the annoying possum brothers Crash and Eddie (Seann William Scott and Josh Peck) introduced in the last film. Eventually 'Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs' stumbles, but its a decent piece of family entertainment that features likable characters and intriguing animation. The comparisons to Pixar films are inevitable, yet despite never finding a strong, winning formula Blue Sky Studios do make entertaining and engaging films.Video: This is a remarkable 1080p AVC encoded framed in the 1.85 to 1 aspect ratio that was no doubt made directly from digital files the animation was rendered on. 'Dawn of the Dinosaurs' is perhaps the best looking film in the series and not only could the textures and individual hairs of characters be visible, but every frame is razor sharp.Audio: To my surprise this blu-ray features a DTS Master Audio 7.1 soundtrack which adds two additional rear channels. It's not really a neccesary addition since the mix isn't as expansive as I hoped and the average home theater enthusiast has a 5.1 set-up. There's a welcome level of bass and low frequency effects during action sequences or whenever dinosaurs walk about, but this is basically a front heavy sound mix, missing much needed rear effects for ambiance.Extras: Directors Carlos Saldanha and Mike Thurmeir, character designer Peter DeSève, art director Michael Knapp, supervising editor Galen Tan Chu and producers Lori Forte and John Donkin all provide an audio commentary, that despite having so many participants is not as informative as I hoped. The discuss the direction they wished to take the series as well as the evolution of the characters and the creation of new ones, but it often seems like they're just watching the film and enjoying each other's company.Storybook Maker (HD): A nifty feature that may be a little difficult for children. Divided into three levels--Bronze Age Storybooks (for ages 1 and 5), Stone Age (for 6 and 11) and Ice Age (for 12 and up) children are given access to a series of film scenes from which they can capture screenshots. They not only have to choose page layouts, but manipulate their images, insert text, and create multiple pages creating a library of their storybooks.

Evolution Expedition (HD, 18:00 mins): A fact filled trip to the George C. Page Museum at the La Brea tar pits where representatives discuss the animals featured in the film and their real life counterparts on exhibit.
Unfinished Deleted Scenes (SD, 5:00 mins): Two sequences that would have added little to the film told with black and white storyboards.
Buck: From Easel to Weasel (HD, 7:00 mins): The development and design of the character featuring interviews with Saldhana and Pegg.
Falling for Scratte (HD, 9:00 mins): A look at Scrat's new female love interest.
Addtional extras include the behind-the scenes featurette Unearthing the Lost World (HD, 9:00 mins), four Scrat Featurettes (SD, 14:00 mins) "The Saber-Toothed Squirrel" ,"From Head to Toe", "Breaking Story" and "News Report", five basic Fox Movie Channel Featurettes (SD, 28:00 mins): "Making a Scene", "In Character with John Leguizamo", "In Character with Ray Romano","In Character with Queen Latifah" and a second "Making a Scene", the "Walk the Dinosaur" Music Video (HD, 2 minutes): A "Walk the Dinosaur" music video comprised of clips from the film and two hilarious Scrat Shorts (HD, 12 minutes) "Gone Nutty" and "No Time for Nuts."
Introduced on the 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' blu-ray, this disc also contains the BD-Live feature Live Lookup that allows you to access actor filmographies and Dawn of the Dinosaurs info from the Internet Movie Database. There's also a Standard DVD Version as well as a Digital Copy of the Film.Source: LatinoReview

Four New Kick-Ass Character Posters & Website!

I guess there was a test screening tonight of Kick-Ass in Hollywood. Lucky for me, and unlucky for them, I was watching New Moon. The reactions for Kick-Ass on Twitter have been nothing but positive, so it appears as if Lionsgate might have a hit on their hands.IGN has four new character posters showing off Kick-Ass, Big Daddy, Hit-Girl and Red Mist.
A twisted, funny, high-octane adventure, director Matthew Vaughn brings KICK-ASS to the big screen.
KICK-ASS tells the story of average teenager Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson), a comic-book fanboy who decides to take his obsession as inspiration to become a real-life superhero. As any good superhero would, he chooses a new name -- Kick-Ass -- assembles a suit and mask to wear, and gets to work fighting crime. There's only one problem standing in his way: Kick-Ass has absolutely no superpowers.
His life is forever changed as he inspires a subculture of copy cats, is hunted by assorted violent and unpleasant characters, and meets up with a pair of crazed vigilantes, including an 11-year-old sword-wielding dynamo, Hit Girl (Chloe Moretz) and her father, Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage). Johnson plays title character, while Fonseca plays the object of the teen's infatuation who believes Dave is gay. Cage is a former cop who wants to bring down a druglord and has trained his daughter (Chloe Moretz) to be a lethal weapon.Click on either poster below to see the other two.

**UPDATE** The official Kick-Ass website has opened! Click HERE to check it out!

Planet 51 Clip Hits the 'Net!

New from TriStar Pictures is Planet 51, an adorable looking CGI film that takes the usual sci-fi cliches and turns them on their heads.
Instead of watching an average American family attempt to hide an alien visitor while working to get him home, Planet 51 starts on an alien world that's a shout-out to the 50s settings of many a sci-fi film. The family, voiced by the likes of Jessica Biel and Justin Long, is visited by an astronaut from our world (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) who at first thinks he's the first person to ever visit the elusive Planet 51.
What follows could be a paint-by-numbers alien movie -- only with a human astronaut as the so-called alien -- or it could be a fun send-off of the genre. We won't find out until November 20, but in the meantime there's this extended clip from Yahoo! to entertain you.
There movie even has a nod to the iconic bike scene in E.T.. Sure, nearly every other movie in its existence has its own version, but it never gets old.

Faris and Aykroyd To Join Yogi Bear

I had no idea that a live-action/animated Yogi Bear movie was in the works and I honestly don't know how to feel about it -- actually, that's a lie. This seems like a terrible idea.
To make matters worse, Dan Aykroyd is currently in negotiations to lend his voice to the Yogi Bear, and rumor is that Justin Timberlake could take over the role of Yogi's diminutive sidekick, Boo Boo. Anna Faris is also in negotiations to star in the film, and would play a nature documentarian.
About the only thing about this project I can't criticize is the inclusion of Faris, as she's a great comedic actress and fun to watch on screen. However, the very idea of a live-action/animated Yogi Bear movie continues to make me recoil in fear as visions of Garfield and Underdog dance in my head. Sure, there's a chance that this movie could be good but more likely than not it's just going to be embarassing for all involved.
Production begins next month in New Zealand.

Bradley Cooper To Frolic in 'Dark Fields'

It's funny what a 200 million dollar summer hit can do for you, as far as exposure goes. Bradley Cooper has signed on to another project, a thriller called "Dark Fields." Neil Burger ("The Illusionist") will direct.Project is described as a what-if story about a designer drug that can make you rich and powerful. Eddie (Cooper) is a down-and-out New York writer until he possesses a pill that gives him the ability to access the full capacity of his brain. He soon realizes that his newfound intelligence and success come at a hefty price as mysterious forces begin to pursue him.I've liked Cooper since his "Alias" days, so it's good to see him working. Here's hoping his cupcoming "The A-Team" will be more "Mission Impossible" than "The Beverly Hillbillies," in terms of TV-to-movie adaptations. Hmm speaking of which, I wonder if they'll make an "Alias" movie in twenty years? Probably not. We'll all be too busy fighting off the robot ninja uprising.Source: The Trades

More Abrams News: He Might Direct The Pilot Of His New Show

Here is yet another story in a week filled with J.J. Abrams news:J.J. Abrams wants to take a hands-on approach to “Undercovers,” his pilot at NBC. In addition to co-writing and executive producing the project with Josh Reims, Abrams is in talks to direct the Warner Bros. TV-produced pilot. NBC’s “Undercovers,” about a husband and wife working together as spies, has been described as a mix between “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” and “The Bourne Identity.”When it comes to Abrams, I'm like how twelve year old girls are with Edward the glittering vampire, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. The guy is simply one of the best genre people working right now, and I always highly anticipate his next project. And when it comes to the TV shows he's been involved with, "Fringe" is just decent but "Alias" is one of my favorites of all time. And "Lost"? Well, I would murder someone if they made me miss an episode from the upcoming final season. Literally, murder them, while crying and saying "It'll all be better soon." So yeah, I'm on board for this.Source: The Live Feed

Yeah.Zach Galifianakis is circling the role of Humpty Dumpty in the "Shrek" spin-off/prequel/cash-in "Puss in Boots."Tom Wheeler is writing the screenplay for the prequel, which will feature the voices of Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek in a story about the events leading up to the feline assassin's first meeting with Shrek & Co. in the second film. They really aren't going to stop, are they? My grand kids will be lining up to watch "Shrek 45" won't they? Will I ever have kids, let alone grand kids? You decide.Anyway, I like Galifianakis and I'm glad he's getting a lot of work lately. He's got: the Jay Roach-directed comedy "Dinner for Schmucks"; Warner Bros.' "Due Date," opposite Robert Downey Jr.; a drama called "It's Kind of a Funny Story"; he might star in ANOTHER dramedy called "Town House"; and then of course there's a sequel to "The Hangover." Wow. Oh and the series he's on with Jason Schwartzman, "Bored to Death," was recently renewed for a second season on HBO. Crazy.Source: The Trades

"Taken" helmer Pierre Morel has signed on to direct "Signals," a thriller that "is expected to take on the tone of a 1970s-era paranoid thriller like 'Three Days of the Condor.'"Morel is a solid director, in terms of being able to construct kinetic action scenes. He's done some good work for Luc Besson. And "Taken" was pretty good, sans the "my daughter is 16 yet acts like she's 12/everything's OK now let's sing" opening and closing ten minutes. I think with some beefed up scripting, ol' Pierre could be making good-to-great action films.Source: The Trades

J.J. Abrams to Assemble Micronauts?

A Micronauts movie? It seems like Hasbro is just throwing anything at the wall now to see what sticks.
According to the Wall Street Journal, none other than J.J. Abrams is currently in negotiations to bring the Micronauts, a sci-fi action figure line from Japan, to the big screen. Arriving in the states during the 70s, the Micronauts enjoyed popularity first as a toy and then as a comic series from Marvel over the next decade.
Though both Image Comics and Devil's Due Publishing have apparently tried to revive the comics in the years since, the toyline itself ended quietly back in 1980.
Unfortunately(?) for me, I have no knowledge of the Micronauts beyond the vague awareness of their existence. So I ask you, readers: Do you want to see a Micronauts movie? How about one helmed by J.J. Abrams?

Two Brothers. One Wife. One New Trailer That Explains The Entire Movie

Jake "Man Meat" Gyllenhaal and Tobey "Bug Eyes" Maguire star in Brothers, a tense, taught thriller about a brother believed to have been killed in battle, only to come home later and find that his own brother has been firing in his wife's hole while they mourned. Who is to blame? Is it the wife for being a slut? The brother, for thinking only of himself? The kids, for encouraging such behavior? The writer, for thinking up the idea in the first place? Too many questions. And the only way to get an answer, is to watch the trailer and decide for yourself. Personally, if I were believed to be dead and I actually wasn't, I'd kick the wife and kids to the curb and enjoy my newly found single life. After all, if your brother ended up banging your wife, would you ever want that life back? Hell no. It's his problem now. I'm off to Cancun. Best parts of the trailer are Tobey Maguire trying to will his own eyes out of their sockets in each scene. Also, don't miss super hunk Jake as he bares all in nothing but a towel. I freeze framed that part of the trailer and am currently writing this article using only one hand. My other hand is touching my wee wee.

GI JOE: RISE OF COBRA Blu-Ray Review

G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA (Blu-Ray)PARAMOUNT HOME ENTERTAINMENT2009/ PG-13/ 113 minsNow Available – List Price $39.99
I made a promise to a friend that I would be a little nicer to Stephen Sommers' 'G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra', though I can't ignore the fact that I have more than a number of problems with this film. Sommers is in the business of creating popcorn movies. His job is to fashion a thrill ride and entertaining escape that makes you forget about reality for two hours as you enter his world of fantasy. He's done that job and more, yet I still feel like something is missing. I like to check my brain at the door, now and then, but I find having my brain stimulated a bit to be more exciting. I like a little substance to my stories, a little cream in my coffee. Good films, at least the memorable ones, make you think a little. Is this the 'G.I. Joe' that I remember from my youth? Not really, but it has the potential to be. This first movie in what is planned to be an new franchise is basically a prologue, an origin story that will hopefully get on track and start heading down familiar territory that entertained millions of kids over the past few decades. Sommers' film is very much in the spirit of G.I. Joe which is more than I can say for what Michael Bay did for 'Transformers'. There were times, watching 'G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra' where I felt like I was looking at something pleasantly familiar that gave me a sense of security. Almost like having that favorite meal mom used to make for the first time in many years. Like 'Transformers' this film has plenty of pluses as well as minuses, but just when I was ready to suspend my disbelief, the picture crumbles under the weight of its ambitions. In a post 9/11 world it's almost as if the producers felt they had to throw in an incredible amount of exposition to justify everything that's happening in this story just so it can appear somewhat believable to us. No matter how they slice it, we the audience know this is not real just as we knew that giant alien robots don't exist no matter how realistic the military they interact with is due to Michael Bay's Pentagon connections. 'G.I. Joe' starts off rather decently, even though much like every film where we are introduced to a team, organization or group, it's through the eyes of an outsider. They did this in the first 'X-Men', where Wolverine is rescued by two team members and then taken on a tour of their operation at 'Xavier's School for the Gifted' by Charles Xavier himself. Wolverine is meant to serve as the eyes of the audience and the same thing happens here, except we get two sets of eyes in the forms of U.S. soldiers Duke (Channing Tatum) and Rip Cord (Marlon Wayans). While transporting a new destructive weapon that uses nano-technology, their convoy gets ambushed by a mysterious group of soldiers led by a raven haired girl who it turns out Duke shares a history with. Just when it looks like it's the end for this dynamic duo, another group of mysterious soldiers comes to their aid and prevent the bad guys from absconding with the weapon. Our two heroes are introduced to the covert ops organization of G.I. Joe with the arrival of their rescuers Scarlett (Rachel Nichols), Breaker (Saïd Taghmaoui), Heavy Duty (Adewale Akinnouye-Agbaje) and the enigmatic Snake-Eyes (Ray Park). Upon meeting their commander (via hologram), the legendary General Hawk (Dennis Quaid), Duke and Rip Cord agree to release the weapon to their custody only if they can accompany them and before long are given the grand tour of the Joe's base of operations, 'The Pit', located deep in the Egyptian Desert.

Sunglasses? In the rain?
When you're introduced to a complex world like this through the eyes of a main character, he'd better be a strong leading man. Now Hugh Jackman is a rare breed, a classically trained performer who can sing and dance as well as act. Even someone with less than half his talent could carry a lead role in 'G.I. Joe'. Channing Tatum, I'm sorry to say, ain't it. This guy is a complete bore and literally walks and talks like a ghetto breakdancer from right off the street. It's not that Tatum is bland, he just doesn't appear to be trying or even care. I suspect someone with less star power like Tatum was cheaper to sign up for this and future sequels. Wayans was probably made his sidekick to add a little flavor and although he outshines Tatum by playing it straight, his screentime is sadly limited. The same can be said for Dennis Quaid although he seems to relish the role of General Hawk and hits the right tone, knowing full well what kind of movie he's in. Supporting players like Nicols, Taghmaoui, Adele and Park make the most of their roles with some leaving more memorable impressions than others. Nichols is no doubt easy on the eyes, but I also believed that her Scarlett was an over-achiever that graduated college at the age of twelve and I bought the fact that she could handle herself as well as the boys. It's nice to see the hint of a romantic relationship between her and Rip Cord, even though at times it feels forced.Ray Park may be a short guy with a tiny voice, but he is one of the best physical performers I've seen in recent years. Though his voice was dubbed over as Darth Maul in 'Star Wars', he was still menacing in the way he carried himself and acted with his body. There are a lot of really good actors who can't perform as physically well as Park and I'm not talking about martial arts abilities. That less is more approach can convey so much within a performance and as a masked character who has taken a vow of silence, Park's work here speaks volumes. You don't have to be familiar with the character of Snake-Eyes to get a sense of who he is, his history and his struggle. Almost on equal footing is the work put in by Byung-hun Lee as ninja assassin Storm Shadow. The history between these two revolves around a series of flashbacks where it was revealed they trained together as children as members of the Arashikage clan and share a bitter rivalry. Of the various flashbacks (and there are a lot) within the film, this is probably the strongest, yet I wish it was explored further. Though bitter rivals, both adult actors convey a sense of loss between their characters that's one of the strongest dramatic elements in the film and they do so with little to no dialogue. Their dynamic is so strong that a part of me wanted to see them in a separate film entirely. Those flashbacks also involve another set of relationships that don't even come close to the dramatic power of Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow's. That raven haired girl who almost killed Duke with her mysterious group of soldiers turns out to be his ex-girlfriend. He may remember her as Ana, the sister of his best friend Rex and his one-time fiance, but she now goes by the name of the Baroness and is played with devilish delight by Sienna Miller. For the majority of her performance, Miller manages to capture the essence of the original character, even if her backstory has been screwed up. She seems to revel in her fiendish behavior with a wink and an impish grin. Only in the third act does her role in events really get silly and we have her cohorts to thank for that. The Baroness has been in cahoots with Scottish megalomaniac arms dealer James McCullen (Christopher Eccleston), the man who would be Destro. Miller is perfectly cast. Eccleston sounds flat and whinny like Craig Ferguson and doesn't make a strong villain. The slack is picked up by Joseph Gordon-Levitt as “The Doctor” who also seems to know what kind of film he's in and channels the late Chris Latta perfectly. You never see his mouth for his entire performance as this character, but I could almost feel him smiling at just how evil he could be. Arnold Vosloo is also appropriately wicked as “master of disguise” Zartan, so much so that I sometimes wished he were given the larger role of Destro over Eccleston. The Paris chase sequence where the Joes attempt to stop the Baroness and Storm Shadow from destroying the Eiffel Tower is no doubt the major action setpiece of the film. Sommers has worked with big budgets and all the toys known in visual effects, but he often gets carried away. What begins as an exciting set-piece for Snake-Eyes as he chases down the bad guys “Action Jackson” style becomes about Duke and Ripcord as they put on those silly armored suits. I have the admit, the visual effects for this sequence are extraordinary, but I suspect that the reason every other effect in this film looks so mediocre is because a good deal of the budget was devoted to this scene. By the third act the film heads down familiar territory where the heroes attempt to stop the bad guys and their insidious plans by staging an assault on their secret base. Stuff like this can be fun at times, even though there's no differentiation from a space, air or underwater battle. I just couldn't escape the feeling that Sommers has such a decent cast here and fails to really use them. What made the G.I. Joe comics and TV series work so well was character development, so why hire capable performers in a live-action adaptation if they're gonna be window dressing? Despite the generic direction the story headed in, there is potential for this franchise now that its been set up. There are a lot of loose ends that could be explored or developed in future films that might even improve this one. Sommers is no dummy, I'd like to believe he knows what he's doing and has better ideas for the next flick. In the meantime, this first film isn't a worthless experience and actually plays better in the comfort of your own home.

All Heavy-Duty needs to complete his 'Blade' Halloween costume is Snake-Eyes' sword.
Video: If only the film's story was as razor sharp as its visual presentation. This is one of those HD transfers that almost looks a little too good. I could really detect no film grain in this AVC encoded 1080p 2.39 to 1 framed transfer. If you put aside some of the underwhelming visual effects, this is a great looking movie in more ways than one. Black levels are strong, yet there is also a remarkable amount of shadow detail in the nighttime sequences. During fully lit scenes, you can see just what a wonderful production design this film has with a rich texture that gives this fantasy world a little realism.Audio: As they did for the 'Transformers 2' blu-ray, Paramount seems to be on the DTS band wagon, employing a DTS 5.1 Master Audio track that's astounding. For over a decade, Sommers has produced incredible sound mixes for his films and 'G.I. Joe' is no exception. Sure, this is a film about big bangs and gunfire, but Alan Silvestri's score is mixed in with the action rather well, always maintaining a presence. The dialogue also manages to come in rather strongly and can always be coherent over the loud explosions or effects.

Has anyone noticed that Snake-Eyes' “mouth” is open and closed in some shots?
Extras: I may not have enjoyed all of Sommers' films, but he always provides informative and engaging audio commentary tracks. Along with producer/editor Bob Ducsay, Sommers' infectious enthusiasm is always a joy to listen to. I even applaud the fact that he's brave enough to point out the film's faults like the visual effects that don't work so well. He's obviously a man who enjoys what he does.Disc two is actually a dvd that features a digital copy and two rather short featurettes. The Big Bang Theory: The Making of G.I. Joe (SD, 29:33 mins) is a behind-the-scenes short that opens with a hilarious bit with Gordon-Levitt reciting Hamlet's soliloquy while holding the Cobra Commander mask in place of a skull. , Larry Hama, Stuart Beatie and nearly the entire cast are featured in on camera interviews where they discuss the production and what the film was designed to be. Only thirty minutes long, but rather informative. Next-Gen Action: The Amazing Visual Effects and Design of G.I. Joe (SD, 21:08) is the second featurette that takes a look at the films special effects. Even though those accelerator suits served as a poor plot device, the time and effort that went into their creation is amazing, resulting in a visual effect that's often tough to differentiate from reality.I like to think of 'G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra' as the initial chapter of something to look forward to even if it gets off to a ho-hum start. It's not the perfect film or even the perfect popcorn movie, but the incredible audio and visual quality of this blu-ray is a marvel and not a bad way to pass the time.

JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA (Blu-Ray)
PARAMOUNT HOME ENTERTAINMENT
2009/ PG-13/ 113 mins
Now Available – List Price $39.99

It's nice to see the hint of a romantic relationship between her and Rip Cord, even though at times it feels forced.

Ray Park may be a short guy with a tiny voice, but he is one of the best physical performers I've seen in recent years.
